Two worlds - Romanticism on one hand, Classicism on the other - come together tonight, balancing out a concerto for two solo instruments with a devotional work. Max Bruch was anchored in his world of Romanticism, even though this was branching out into new directions. Characteristic features of his work are his colourful orchestration and exuberant melodies. He was in his seventies when, in 1911, he decided to write the Double Concerto for Viola and Clarinet in E minor for his son, a clarinettist. The work is performed for us on this occasion by the violinist Kristina Fialová and the clarinettist Igor Františák.

Beethoven's Mass in C major, written for Prince Nikolaus Esterházy II in 1807, received its premiere that same year in Eisenstadt. The composer felt a great sense of responsibility to acquit himself with honour in this task, as this was the work which would herald his replacement of the already ailing previous incumbent Joseph Haydn, whose masses Beethoven described as "inimitable masterpieces". In this performance by the Czech Philharmonic Choir and our four outstanding soloists, we can look forward to a profound experience to mark the anniversary of the death of one of the greatest-ever composers, Ludwig van Beethoven. At the podium for this concert is the Bohuslav Martinů Philharmonic Orchestra's chief conductor Vojtěch Spurný.
