Heading up our Festive Concert to mark the 26th season of the Talentinum festival are Josef Špaček and Leoš Svárovský – both of them artists who themselves took part in the festival in earlier years when they were still seen as up-and-coming stars in the Czech musical firmament.
Josef Špaček, currently one of the most sought-after Czech violin virtuosos, first appeared at the Talentinum festival 15 years ago when, at the age of 20, his brilliant virtuosity dazzled the audience at the former Dům Umění concert hall in Zlín. Tonight he will be playing Dmitry Shostakovich's first violin concerto written from 1947-48 and subsequently dedicated to the illustrious David Oistrakh, who successfully premiered the work a couple of years later. The piece is technically very challenging: "This concerto poses exceedingly interesting problems for the performer who plays, as it were, a pithy Shakespearean role, which demands complete emotional and intellectual involvement," Oistrakh himself observed in his own words.
The concert also features the Swiss composer Pierre Wissmer's Divertissement sur un Choral, and Tchaikovsky's ever-youthful Pathétique Symphony, conducted by the Bohuslav Martinů Philharmonic's Principal Guest Conductor Leoš Svárovský, who first took part in the Talentinum festival in 1986.
