BOHUSLAV MARTINŮ PHILHARMONIC ORCHESTRA
Conductor: Stanislav Vavřínek

In the period of the Austrian monarchy going to the dance was a mass-participation event, and even today our southern neighbours refer to the ball season as "the fifth season of the year", primarily because of of the sheer number of such events and their unique atmosphere. Similarly in the approaching ball season the Bohuslav Martinů Philharmonic transports its audiences, as it were, to the period of the elegant balls which have been an integral part of the social life of ordinary townsfolk since the mid-19th century. One or two of the rather strict - by today's standards - rules of etiquette have been dispensed with, however, so young ladies will therefore not be required to keep about their person a decorative card listing the dances for which she is already engaged with a partner. In the course of the evening we will hear a variety of pieces from various corners of the esrtwhile Austrian monarchy, so listen out for the Czech polka, the Wallachian 'odzemek', the Viennese waltz, the Hungarian rhapsody and dances from Transylvania. The general idea of the concert is thus to remind us of the rich and celebrated tradition of the Austro-Hungarian grand ball - a prestigious social occasion and one of the highest forms of dance for entertainment. The dance component is provided by Hradišťan, founded in 1950 in Uherské Hradiště, whose choreographer is Ladislava Košíková.

At the podium conducting the Orchestra is Stanislav Vavřínek.
