COLLEGIUM 1704
Conductor: Václav Luks

The dramatic fate of women heroes has inspired artists since ancient times, with literature, art and music all finding inspiration in tales brimming with passion, love and grief, but also defiance, joy and determination. Tonight Magdalena Kožená takes us through a "Garden of Lamentations" in a programme of dramatic scenes featuring illustrious women heroes such as Armida and Ariadne, but also some lesser-known stories of devoted love, such as the tale of the nymph Ero. The music of the Italian cantatas by George Frederick Handel is complemented by works by his Venetian and Neopolitan contemporaries, and the fervency of Italian music thus intertwines with the passion of these other immortal tales.

Our soloist Magdalena Kožená is justly ranked among the world's most celebrated contemporary singers, shown not only by her unprecedented number of prestigious awards of all kinds (among the most notable being her outright victory at the sixth international Mozart festival in Salzburg in 1995), but also by her exclusive recording contract with Germany's top-ranking Deutsche Grammophon Gesellschaft. The singer, who comes from Brno, also excels regularly at the most prestigious opera venues the world over. Also deserving of mention are her many activities in the name of her own foundation, which provides generous support for ZUŠ arts and music schools in this country and for the development of talented children.

The world-renowned mezzo-soprano will be performing with the unique Collegium 1704 orchestra which specialises in playing period music, especially Baroque. This orchestra, formed in 1991, is conducted by its founder the harpsichordist Václav Luks.
