The overall theme of our penultimate Subscription Series K concert is chamber works by Dvořák and two of his two protégés - Oskar Nedbal a Vítězslav Novák. This choice of his two disciples is not accidental, because the year 2020 marks the 90th anniversary of Nedbal's death and the 150th anniversary of Novák's birth.

Antonín Dvořák will probably be forever remembered primarily as an outstanding composer of symphonic, cantata and oratory music, but his chamber works also demonstrate exceptional ingenuity and considerable appeal, and his pieces Silent Woods, his G-minor rondo and his Piano Trio No. 3 are clear evidence of this.

Vítězslav Novák can certainly be classed as one of Dvořák's most exceptional protégés. It was in 1910 that he wrote his splendid five-part piano cycle Pan named after the ancient god of fields, flocks and forests. Its central section, The Sea, is a vivid picture painted with a colourful musical palette, combining the song of the waves with the way that sunlight plays and glints on the surface of the sea.

The Violin Sonata Op. 9 by Oskar Nedbal, a native of Tábor, is probably not one of this composer's best-known compositions. An early piece written when Nedbal was only 20, it nonetheless displays exceptional melodic ingenuity and great harmonic richness, and makes considerable demands on the performer. The Sonata clearly demonstrates Nedbal's excellent knowledge of the technical parameters of both instruments. It is a very impressive piece which gives the artist ample scope to express his own feelings, emotions and passions.
Our programme tonight is performed by the Bohuslav Martinů Philharmonic's concertmaster Ivana Kovalčíková, together with the acclaimed cellist Dominika Weiss Hošková and the pianist Jana Chaudhuri.
