The final concert in our Subscription Series A presents outstanding works by Arthur Honegger, Frederic Chopin, and Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky.

The title of the opening piece, Rugby, shows that the composer was inspired here by a sport that completely fascinated him, above all with its constant dynamic movement which, while it may look entirely chaotic, is organised in a very sophisticated way. This single-movement orchestral work composed in 1928, which uses music to give the impression of a rugby match in progress, became very popular with the public almost immediately.

Frederic Chopin was undoubtedly one of most brilliant pianists of all time, and it therefore comes as no surprise that he wrote the vast majority of his work for solo piano. Nonetheless he also wrote two piano concertos with orchestral accompaniment, and his E-minor concerto written in 1830 is performed by Olga Scheps, the acclaimed German-Russian pianist and winner of many prestigious performing awards.

Our final piece this evening is Tchaikovsky's 5th Symphony. Composed over two months in 1888, the exquisite and highly emotional music make it one of the best symphonic works ever written.

The Bohuslav Martinů Philharmonic Orchestra is led by its Chief Conductor Tomáš Brauner.
