Ivo Medek's piece Triax was written in 2001 for the Prague Spring festival, reworked into a new version a year later for the DAMA DAMA Central European percussion ensemble. The underlying principle of the composition lies in the way it is played in three axes passing between percussion, piano and orchestra. DAMA DAMA has been an unusual phenomenon in the field of today's classical music, with critics calling it one of the best ensembles „which Czech music can offer to other countries". The acclaim and considerable public interest it has attracted are due not only to the players' virtuosity, but in particular to their great expressiveness in performing contermporary works by Czech and international composers. The music of Mozart loomed large in the life of Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky, and it was due to his immortal art that Tchaikovsky decided to take up music as a profession. It was in Mozart that he came to terms with, and was able to work through his moments of personal grief, and Mozart's music permeates not only the orchestral suite we hear tonight, but other works by Tchaikovsky too. Brahms's first symphony was a long time in the gestation, undergoing a number of revisions before winning him deserved public acclaim in 1876, with the symphony sometimes referred to as Beethoven's 10th.
