In late October the Congress Centre in Zlín welcomes one of the world’s most in-demand Czech conductors, Tomáš Netopil, teaming up with the Orchestra to present a programme celebrating the mastery of three musical giants – Beethoven, Mozart and Dvořák.

We open with Beethoven’s Consecration of the House overture, which was commissioned by Carl Friedrich Hensler, the Director of Vienna’s Theater in der Josefstadt. The piece was performed at the start of a gala evening after the theatre reopened in 1822 after reconstruction. This is followed by Mozart’s fresh piano concertoin D minor, written in 1785, and played tonight by the 17-year-old extraordinarily talented Jan Schulmeister, outright winner of many prestigious piano competitions including the César Franck Piano Competition in Brussels, Piano Talents in Milán, and the Great Masters Piano Competition – Vladimir Horowitz Edition in Spain, and holder of the Gold Medal with Distinction from the Manhattan International Music Competition in New York. The concert concludes with Antonín Dvořák’s fifth symphony, a piece written in a mere six weeks, and one of the composer’s most lyrical symphonies. Overflowing with melodic invention and a spirit of happy contentment, the work represented a step change in its time between the composer’s earlier and later symphonies.
