Stabat Mater
Maundy Thursday sees the Congress Centre in Zlín resonating with some highly evocative compositions at the interface of classical music and world music. The Welsh composer Karl Jenkins’s Stabat Mater is based on the medieval sequence of the same name depicting the suffering of a mother standing under the cross on which her son is dying. The music gives vent to the pain, capturing the depth of the Mother's despair and gradually evolving into a prayer of devotion. It culminates in the fervent desire for final redemption at Christ's side through the same sacrifice and suffering.
His 2008 setting of Stabat Mater is typical of Jenkins’s compositional approach, combining symphony orchestra and choir with elements of Middle Eastern music, ethnic instruments and vocals. This syncretic work comprises twelve movements in which the Latin text of the sequence is interspersed with verses in English, Greek, Aramaic, Hebrew and early Arabic.
Our conductor in Karl Jenkins's Stabat Mater tonight is Stanislav Vavřínek, in a performance enhanced by the phenomenal queen of the Czech avant-garde, Iva Bittová, who will produce the ethnic vocals alongside the wonderful Markéta Cukrová. The choral element is provided by the Ars Brunensis choir under the artistic direction of Dan Kalousek.
