A selection of opera arias, songs and piano pieces from the works of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart
To mark Mozart’s 270th birthday year we invite you to a unique evening of music and drama combining the best of the composer's music and personal life. The carefully curated programme performed by the Prague National Theatre coloratura soprano Vanda Šípová and renowned pianist Michal Mašek presents a selection from Mozart's operas, Lieder and piano works. Well-known and lesser-known arias will be performed including the rousing Queen of the Night from The Magic Flute, a selection from the operas Idomeneus and The Marriage of Figaro, and solo piano pieces that demonstrate the composer’s extraordinary musical sensitivity.
The music pieces are interspersed with readings from Mozart’s letters to his wife Constanze, when the popular actress Anna Polívková brings the composer's words to life with remarkable sensibility, as if the spirit of Constanze herself were reading them. In this way we gain not just musical but also personal insights into the world of the Mozart couple.
The climax of the evening is the poignant Lacrimosa from Mozart's unfinished Requiem, followed by an excerpt from the text that Constanze attached to the composer's letters on the day of his death, December 5, 1791. This is our moment of closure – not just of this concert, but of the powerful human story of one of the greatest musical geniuses that mankind has ever known.
