April 30th, 1946 - for many, an ordinary working Tuesday ahead of the May Day holiday, but for the newly founded Baťa national enterprise’s Symphony Orchestra, a red-letter day. It’s 8.00 p.m., and after weeks of intensive rehearsals the orchestra performs in front of the public for the first time in the now legendary Velké Kino as Principal Conductor Rudolf Kvasnica raises his baton to cue the opening notes of Dvořák's first Slavonic Dance. The tension in the hall turns into excitement as the audience’s cheers confirm that Zlín definitely deserves its philharmonic…
Over these 80 years several generations of excellent musicians have passed through the Orchestra's ranks, with the Zlín Philharmonic serving as a connection both in their professional careers and personal lives. It is they who have helped shape the face of the Philharmonic and its musical identity together with the equally important chief conductors who have given direction to the orchestra, honed its artistic development and taken it to the next levels.
So it is that 80 years to the day after the Orchestra’s first public performance, we present a special evening of celebrations starring the Orchestra’s musicians joined by former chief conductors Thomas Brauner, Vojtěch Spurny a Stanislav Vavrinek, and the current chief conductor Robert Kružík.
Our rich and varied musical programme tonight highlights the decorum of the English, the brooding passion of Spain, the unique rhythm of Gershwin, and the lyricism and refinement of Dvořák not to mention, of course, the music of Bohuslav Martinů, our namesake, who serves as a reminder of the Orchestra’s ties to the Bat’a family and the city of Zlín.
It features all the Orchestra’s instrument sections and uniquely puts the spotlight on each of the four maestros both in their roles as conductors but also as soloists in their own right. And who knows: perhaps they’ll come on stage for a “tutti” together in a grand finale.
