Tonight we welcome back to Zlín the exceptionally talented violinist and winner of the prestigious international Eurovision Young Musicians competition Daniel Matejča, who performs Antonín Dvořák's Violin Concerto in A minor with the Bohuslav Martinů Philharmonic and its chief conductor Robert Kružík. The work, one of the most important in the global violin repertoire, was completed in 1879 and is prized primarily for its rich musicality and natural lyricism, so typical of Dvořák's music.

Before that, we hear Josef Suk's ceremonial march Into a New Life, which became one of the musical symbols of the Czech Sokol movement with its still impressive energy and distinctive fanfare. In 1932, the piece was awarded a silver medal at the Los Angeles Olympics and during World War II served as the signature tune for the Czechoslovak government-in-exile's broadcasts from London.

It was in 1883, the year in which Dvořák's Violin Concerto was premiered, that Brahms's third symphony was written in Wiesbaden. Brahms dedicated this romantic work, renowned for its emotional depth, to his friend and conductor Hans von Bülow. The entire cycle is unique in its internal structure, as it is the only Brahms symphony to close all four movements with a quiet and conciliatory pianissimo instead of triumphal flourishes, as each bar resonates with a sincere and deeply human revelation of the composer at the peak of his artistic powers.
