Ballet is an art form that naturally combines music, movement and visual elements into a unified expressive whole. Its modern form arose from court festivities in 17th-century France under Louis XIV, leading on to the great stage works of the 19th and 20th centuries. To this day ballet retains the ability to tell a story without words and create scope for music and dance to interact imaginatively in ways that speak to audiences of all ages.

Tonight's programme presents selections from Tchaikovsky's Nutcracker and Swan Lake, and from Prokofiev's ballet Romeo and Juliet in a production of contrasting lyrical passages, virtuoso dance scenes and high drama from the classical ballet repertoire to create a visual image of the range of its expressivity.

In a performance reflecting the natural artistic synergy of two Moravian centres – Zlín and Olomouc, the choreographer is Jan Fousek, artistic director at the Moravian Theatre in Olomouc, and it features soloists of the Olomouc ballet company, with musical staging by the company's conductor Tomáš Hanák. Playing the orchestral role is the Bohuslav Martinů Philharmonic in this exceptional joint arts project bringing together the symphony orchestra and ballet company in a production of classical ballet in a concert context as a distinctive and vibrant form of music and dance.
