Concert version by Michael Prostějovský
Easter Holy Week sees the Bohuslav Martinů Philharmonic Orchestra teaming up with the Theatre of Moravian Slovakia in an impressive musical and theatrical production of the world-famous story of the last days of Jesus Christ. The story was adapted into a musical with distinct elements of rock opera in 1969 by Tim Rice and Andrew Lloyd Webber, who created the work known all over the world today as Jesus Christ Superstar.
Their original intention was to come up with a daring rock musical relating from Judas's perspective the story of betrayal and Christ's suffering. However, they could not find a producer willing to stage the work, and the idea was even rejected with the ironic label "the worst idea in history". Concerns were raised primarily about how the Church might react, which is why the musical's songs were first released in 1970 on two gramophone records. Only then did the work reach the stage of London's West End, and shortly afterwards Broadway, where it caused quite a stir. Numbers such as I Don't Know How To Love Him, Everything's Alright, Heaven on Their Minds and Gethsemane quickly became standard repertoire around the world and, in later Czech versions, also finding favour with audiences here at home.
