Lucie Bílá, who tops the bill in this concert, needs no lengthy introduction as she is one of the best known Czech pop music figures over recent decades with the ability to appeal to a wide range of listeners in an artistic career of extraordinary continuity. She has won the Týtý TV popularity poll many times, the Czech Nightingale music industry award a record number of times, a series of Czech Popular Music Academy awards, and the Thalia Prize in the Light Opera and Musical category. In short, she's been the queen of Czech pop for a long time and has achieved in her unbelievable career just about everything there is to achieve.
Not only a massive celebrity, Lucie Bílá is also an outstanding artist whose eclectic span of styles and genres coupled with her extraordinary ability to bring such expression to her singing is something unique in Czech pop music. Her performing style stands out for the distinctive way in which she conveys what the lyrics really mean, combined with her technically confident, characteristically expressive voice. Throughout her career, this "first lady of Czech pop music" has rung the changes moving between pop songs, musicals, chanson and ballad, but always with the stamp of her own distinctive and instantly recognisable performing style. This stylistic diversity and ability to avoid being pigeonholed is one of the reasons for her enduring appeal.
Pivotal to her career has been her many years of artistic collaboration with the composer and songwriter couple Ondřej Soukup and Gábina Osvaldová, with the pianist Petr Malásek, and her work with Pokáč, the band O5 and Radeček, Patricia Kaňok and others. It is this combination of her distinctive performing individuality backed up by carefully chosen material and arrangements that has given much of her output such a lasting presence on this country's pop scene.
Tonight's concert features a cross-section of Lucie Bílá's proven repertoire representing several different aspects of her work in a show combining pop with a rich symphonic sound.
