The first night of December sets the scene for the four "singing" clarinets at Zlín's Congress Centre when the Cantarina Clarinete quartet take to the stage. The ensemble, comprising the young clarinettists Hana Bahníková, Jana Lahodna, Jana Černohouzová and Věra Kestřánková, was formed in October 2011 at the Prague Performing Arts Academy's Faculty of Music and Dance as a student creative project, since when it has developed an active concert presence.
The quartet have performed at a number of major events and festivals such as the Dvořák Prague Festival, the Mahler 'Music of Thousands' Festival in Jihlava, the Christmas Concert in the Rudolfinum, and the Golden Prague Festival awards ceremony. They also work regularly with the Hlávka Foundation, and have taken part artistically several times in ceremonies associated with the conferring of professorships by the President of the Czech Republic.
The Cantarina Clarinete ensemble's programme for advent in Zlín showcases the clarinet in a wide range of tones, moods, and expressive styles, with arrangements of well-known Czech and international works from the Baroque, Classical, and Romantic repertoire, but also pop and jazz pieces, including original arrangements by the performers themselves. The Christmas atmosphere is helped along with a selection of Christmas songs and carols performed in a gentle and festive style.
