Jakub Jan Ryba | Czech Christmas Mass „Hej, mistře!"
Christmas without Ryba? That sounds fishy! Traditions have their place at Christmas, not just on the plate, where we typically serve up fish, but in music too. And what kind of Christmas would it be without Jakub Jan Ryba's renowned Czech Christmas Mass? This piece, first heard over 200 years ago in the choir loft of the Rožmitál church, has become an integral part of the Christmas celebrations and the highlight of our Orchestra's Christmas concert every year, and so it is this year too.
The Zlín Philharmonic gave its first performance of Ryba's iconic Czech Christmas Mass in December 1970 in the former Dům Umění Arts Centre, since when it has been a regular feature of the Orchestra's Christmas tradition. This year it is conducted by Zdeněk Klauda, with the Orchestra ably assisted by the Permoník choir from Karviná and a quartet of leading Czech soloists.
