Both these composers lived part of their lives in Vienna. Joseph Haydn composed his C major Cello Concerto for a long-time friend, then the principal cellist in Prince Nikolaus Esterházy‘s orchestra. The work was presumed lost until 1961 when a copy of the score was discovered at the Prague National Museum. It was subsequently performed by Miloš Sádlo with the Czech Radio Symphony Orchestra under Charles Mackerras.
Playing the concerto tonight is the successful young cellist Petr Nouzovský who studied in Prague, Dresden and Madrid and has won considerable acclaim. Since 2005 he has been a regular guest at the Prague Spring international music competition, and he has recorded some 20 CDs for record labels both in this country and abroad. His originality and brilliant technique make him one of the best Czech soloists and chamber musicians at the present time.
Anton Bruckner was a great admirer of Richard Wagner, whom he met in person for the last time in 1882 when he went to see a performance of Parsifal in Bayreuth. It was this profound experience that moved him to set about composing his 7th Symphony, his most deeply-felt work, and the one most admired and loved by the listening public.
The Bohuslav Martinů Philharmonic Orchestra will be conducted by the internationally acclaimed Jakub Hrůša, who is also now the principal conductor of the PKF Prague Philharmonia.
