Mischa Maisky with the Philharmonic in May

 

Starting to play the cello at the age of eight, Mischa Maisky went on to the conservatoires in Riga and Leningrad, and then at the age of 15 he began to study under the great Mstislav Rostropovich at the Moscow Conservatoire. However his studies were interrupted when he was sent to a labour camp for 18 months for buying a tape recorder on the black market, and after his sister emigrated to Israel. Seeking to continue his studies on his release, he found that his only option was to repay the Soviet authorities the cost of his education, and emigrate to Israel. In 1973 he won the Gaspar Cassadó international competition in Florence, and made his Carnegie Hall debut in the same year with the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra. The following year, in which he began studying with Grigory Pyatigorsky, marked the start of his international career.

Today Mischa Maisky makes his home near Brussels.

Making his second appearance in Zlín, he will be playing Beethoven's Triple Concerto for piano, violin and cello, and Dvořák's B minor Cello Concerto. The concert, which is conducted by Stanislav Vavřínek, also features the violinist Sang-Hee Cheong and the pianist Shiran Wang.
