BOHUSLAV MARTINŮ PHILHARMONIC
Conductor:
JAKUB KLECKER

The world-class pianist Eugen Indjić has again taken up our invitation and will be making his third visit to Zlín, on this occasion playing the Brahms first piano concerto. He has been amazing audiences with his phenomenal talent since his early youth when, at the age of 10, he performed in an NBC TV broadcast, and then three years later with the Washington Symphony Orchestra. When he was just 16, a critic in Copenhagen wrote: "He plays Chopin like a Pole, Debussy like a Frenchman, and Prokofiev with the mastery of a Russian." Every time he performs, the experience is something special. Even though the solo part was played on its premiere by the composer himself, already recognised as an outstanding piano virtuoso, the Hannover audience was left in a state of utter bemusement. This was because Brahms had conceived his concerto - contrary to tradition - as a symphonic whole, in which the piano blends into the overall framework rather than playing the dominant role. The stormy character of this work is not merely incidental: the opening part was originally intended for a symphony inspired by the tragic end of the life of his friend the composer Robert Schumann.

Much has been written about the fateful love of Zdeněk Fibich, the Czech composer of the second half of the 19th century, whose deep and touching feelings for the 24-year-old Anežka Schulzová were expressed in his Second Symphony. This concert of works by these two Romantic composers will be conducted by Jakub Klecker, who since 2004 has been working at the National Theatre in Brno. In 2010 he began to work with the Moravian-Silesian National Theatre in Ostrava, and from next season he will take up the post of Chief Conductor there.
