Dvořák's Violin Concerto is preceded by Zdeněk Fibich's idyll for orchestra At Twilight, in which the composer depicts the idyllic atmosphere of his evening walks on Žofín Island in Prague with his pupil Anežka Schulzová. Dvořák was encouraged to write his violin concerto by the outstanding German virtuoso Joseph Joachim, who also assisted him with advice. At the time, Dvořák's work was seen as novel in its youthfulness, and even instinctive. Only later did it come to be understood as a carefully constructed composition by a man of immense richness of mind and spirit. The concerto is performed by leading Czech violinist Gabriela Demeterová, and the orchestra conducted by Jakub Klecker, musical director of the Ostrava-based Moravian-Silesian National Theatre Opera Company.
We are dedicating this pre-Christmas concert to Beethoven, one of the greatest composers, who was born just before Christmas 1770 in Bonn. He faced up to the misfortunes of life through his work, predicating the indomitability of the spirit over bodily affliction. His Fifth Symphony deterred some conductors for a long time, and they deleted some passages, because Beethoven had flown in the face of the rules. Even the seasoned experts took some time to realise that what Beethoven was instigating with this symphony was a revolution in music, weaving into this extensive composition his own genius and brilliant mastery of a whole array of different musical techniques.
