Joseph Haydn, often called the Father of the Symphony, displayed a remarkable ability to compose in a way that was modern and of its time. It is therefore all the more remarkable that Haydn not only reflected the very latest development of the musical idiom, but also that it was his work that was in many respects the vehicle for these developments. This is particularly the case in his instrumental work where he, above all, established the conventional parameters of the string quartet and the symphony.

The epithet "La Passione" for his Symphony no. 49. composed in 1768, comes not from his own hand and does not appear on the earlier transcriptions. It used to be said that the work was written in the context of a tragic accident which, fortunately for Haydn, turned out favourably. His Symphony no. 95 in C minor, the third of the series of "London" symphonies, was completed in 1791, and written for his first visit to London, where it was performed at the Hanover Square Rooms. The Piano Concerto no. 11 was written in the galant syle for harpsichord or piano, and published in 1784. This style was more characteristic of Haydn's earlier work. The third movement, styled on Hungarian folk music, also has shades of similarity with Mozart's piano concertos.
Vojtěch Spurný, chief conductor of the Bohuslav Martinů Philharmonic, will again be directing the orchestra from the keyboard.
