The renowned Baroque composer Johann Sebastian Bach needs no introduction, and the works of four of his composer sons - Wilhelm Friedemann, Carl Philipp Emanuel, Johann Christian and Johann Friedrich Christoph are also known. But you may not know that Bach had a whole series of other relatives whose compositions merit attention.
In this concert some of these works will be brought to us by the Orchestra's chief conductor Vojtěch Spurný who, in addition to his conducting, specialises in playing period keyboard instruments and also the modern-day quarter-tone piano. For Czech Radio, for example, he has recorded an extensive selection of works for harpsichord, clavichord and hammer piano. We have previously heard him perform in Zlín in the dual role of conductor and soloist in Kaňka's piano concerto, in Beethoven's own piano version of his violin concerto, and a number of other works. Vojtěch Spurný also has the great gift of being able to engage with audiences through the spoken word too. He perfected his interpretation of early music and harpsichord performance at the Hoogeschool de Kunsten in Utrecht, the Netherlands, graduating with the Uitvoerend Musicus diploma.
