A2 CZECH MUSIC OPENS TO THE WORLD

Venue: Zlín Congress Centre  |  Organizer: Filharmonie Bohuslava Martinů, o.p.s.  |

B. Smetana: Vltava
S. Rachmaninov: Piano Concerto No. 2 in C minor, Op. 18
A. Dvořák: Symphony No. 9 in E minor, 'From the New World', Op. 95

Soloist: WON KIM, piano
BOHUSLAV MARTINŮ PHILHARMONIC ORCHESTRA
Conductor: Leoš Svárovský

Two of these pieces are pearls from the treasury of Czech music that probably represent the work of our composers to the world most often. The symphonic poem Vltava is part of Bedřich Smetana's six-part cycle composed after he lost his hearing and withdrew from public life. Reflected on the river's surface is a narrative describing how the Vltava gathers strength from its sources, eventually building into a majestic and unstoppable current which becomes, for the composer, a symbol of the nation and of his life.

Dvořák wrote his Symphony No. 9 in the first year of his stay in America, where the hustle and bustle and fascination of his new surroundings made their mark. Financially independent, he was also aware of his responsibility as the standard-bearer of Czech music, and launched himself enthusiastically into this exceptional composition, completing it in a relatively short time.

Won Kim, one of South Korea's most remarkable pianists, performs frequently with major European and American orchestras. Among the evidence of his outstanding talent is the fact that he has won the Maria Canals International Music Competition.
Conducting the FBM Orchestra will be its principal guest conductor Leoš Svárovský.

Choi,Dukjoo Jogakbo Exhibition -Patchwork wrapping cloth

It is not only impossible but also meaningless to analyze the artistic achievements of Choi Dukjoo, as a jogakbo artisan, the way we critique an art piece. Rather than argue the composition skill or the color choices made in each piece, we can seek more efficient enjoyment by discussing her design sensibility and style manifest by the use of the material – fabric. One can appreciate craft work free of the normal intensity of artistic strain required in appreciating other forms of art.

It’s fabulous. Attractive. Lovely. It’s monochromatic, yet fancy. It’s colorful but doesn’t stick out; that’s what I like about it. I like the simplicity of the composition. Choi Dukjoo Jogakbo Exhibition will inspire these feelings and allow us to enjoy our time. That should be enough.
