As November 2017 will mark the 170th anniversary of the death of Felix Mendelssohn, we have devoted this entire concert to his works. It opens with the overture Calm Sea and Prosperous Voyage. The calm depicted at the start is not favourable for seafarers, and thus the piece starts in sombre mood. This overture, the fourth of seven written by Mendelssohn, was inspired by two poems by Goethe.

Mendelssohn wrote his First Piano Concerto on his travels round Italy in 1830-1831, premiering the work in Munich. This work of dazzling technicality will be performed by Marek Kozák, the young pianist who won the Prague Spring 2016 competition, and was semi-finalist at the Fryderyk Chopin International Piano Competition in Warsaw. Another journey, this time to Scotland, was the inspiration for Mendelssohn's Third Symphony. Scotland also happens to be the base for the young talented conductor Jiří Rožeň as Assistant Chief Conductor with the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra. He was a finalist at the prestigious Donatella Flick LSO Conducting Competition in 2014 and the Nestlé and Salzburg Festival Young Conductors Award in 2015.
