The Bohuslav Martinů Philharmonic Orchestra marks the approach of Easter in April with a performance of Giuseppe Verdi's monumental Requiem, a compelling opus dedicated in memoriam to two of his compatriots, the composer Gioachino Rossini and the poet and novelist Alessandro Mazzoni. The work, premiered at the San Marco church in Milan in 1874 with the composer himself conducting, still remains one of the best-known and most dramatic examples of the requiem genre.

Verdi was well versed in the application of dramatic effect in music - something particular evident in his several celebrated operas and, indeed, demonstrated powerfully in the considerable prominence given to the soloists in this Requiem, not to mention the no less than 16 performances of the work staged by prisoners in the Theresienstadt concentration camp during the Second World War.

Tonight's performance features some of the leading exponents of Czech opera accompanied by the Czech Philharmonic Choir of Brno - one of the foremost European choral ensembles, and the Bohuslav Martinů Philharmonic is directed by its Principal Guest Conductor Tomáš Brauner.
