This evening dedicated to Ludwig van Beethoven presents an opera overture, a concerto and a symphony. We start with the Leonora No. 1 overture. Beethoven wrote only one opera, Fidelio, full of dramatic intrigues and equally dramatic music. However he composed a total of four overtures for the opera, three of them called Leonora, and the fourth - Fidelio. Each of them presents some of the dramatic themes, but none of them encapsulates the essence of the work as a whole.

The first version of the Piano Concerto No. 2 dates from 1795, but the composition reached its final form three years later. The concerto was well received and it marked Beethoven's acceptance as Vienna's new musical talent at the outset of his promising career as a pianist. The work clearly reflects the influences of Mozart and Haydn with its intriguing third movement, based on Viennese folk music, setting the mood of spring. It is performed by Vojtěch Spurný, who is also this evening's conductor.

Symphony No. 7, which Wagner called the "apotheosis of the dance", was written between 1809 and 1812 - a period marking a new departure in Beethoven's work, when elements of Classicism and Romanticism begin to fuse together.
