The two pieces by French composers surround one of the most beautiful flute concertos ever written. Ibéria is part of the cycle of three works composed by Debussy between 1905 and 1912 in sets called Images. This work was originally intended for two pianos, but the composer very soon turned his vision of an orchestral version into reality. Echoes of Spanish folk music, Andalusian nights, and dancing accompanied by the guitar all combine into a swirl of dazzling impact and rich musicality.
César Franck was a man of reflective temperament, and composition for him meant the expression of the most profound ideas and ethical principles. That, indeed, is what we find in his only Symphony in D minor which he wrote late in life. Mozart's Flute Concerto No. 1 is performed by Jan Ostrý, currently one of the top-ranking Czech flautists, who has studied at the Prague conservatoire and at two French schools. Stanislav Vavřínek, who is well-known to audiences in Zlín, is at the podium.
