In our last concert season we heard one part of Ottorino Respighi's 'Roman triptych', and this time we present his Fountains of Rome. This piece, the first part, features elements of impressionism and brilliant orchestration. Stravinsky's music for the ballet Firebird brings together characteristics of the Russian tradition and the airiness of musical impressionism. After its hugely successful premiere at the Paris Opéra on 25th June 1910 (staged by Sergey Diaghilev's Ballets Russes), Stravinsky wrote a six-part orchestral suite which he re-worked between 1919 and 1945. Tonight we present the 1919 version, in which the composer used a much smaller orchestra. Maurice Ravel, entranced by the world of the child, first wrote his Mother Goose set of five pieces inspired by story tales for the piano, and subsequently re-wrote it for orchestra. The work eventually became a ballet.
Erich Wolfgang Korngold, born into a Jewish family in Brno in 1896, is described as a pioneer in writing film music for Hollywood. After the war, he returned to concert music and wrote his violin concerto.
Jiří Vodička is concert master with the Czech Philharmonic, an outstanding soloist, and a member of the world-famous Smetana Trio.
