The Messiah oratorio is surely one of German Baroque composer George Frideric Handel's most popular works, and clearly an inspirational piece of exceptional creative endeavour. Wanting the work to be staged promptly, Handel accepted an invitation to Dublin, where it was awaited with a sense of anticipation. The work was first performed on 13th April 1742 in a hall for an audience of 600. An interesting sidenote for us today is that women were asked to leave their crinoline hoops at home, and men to come without their swords, as the hall could then accommodate 100 more people. This is a sign of just how much interest there was in this exceptional work right from the outset. The concluding Hallelujah was greeted by the audience on their feet, the acclaim for this captivating music knowing no bounds.

Our performers are the Brno-based Czech Philharmonic Choir, one of the best choral groups in Europe, and four first-rate Czech soloists together with the Chief Conductor of the Bohuslav Martinů Philharmonic, Vojtěch Spurný.
