BOHUSLAV MARTINŮ PHILHARMONIC ORCHESTRA

Our opening concert in this subscription series is a musical journey to a distinctive country of spicy cuisine and golden wines, a land which dances to the csardas and the verbunk, with centuries of advanced culture built on a rich folk tradition. Our conductor Leoš Svárovský guides the Orchestra in a musical tableau across the vast Hungarian plain whose distinctive melodies and rhythms - now characteristically vibrant and full of passion, now melancholy and plaintive - waft through the fresh Transylvanian country air.

The programme features works by the two Hungarian composers György Ligeti and Franz Liszt, followed by a selection from the set of Johannes Brahms’s 21 Hungarian Dances orchestrated by Albert Parlow, Martin Schmeling and Antonín Dvořák. Tonight’s soloist is the talented 20-year-old pianist Jan Čmejla, winner of the prestigious Épinal International Piano Competition in 2022.
