Our opening concert in Subscription Series B takes us to fin-de-siècle Paris with the cultural, social, scientific and economic developments of La Belle Epoque in full flower, and the French capital, as the centre of European art, in a state of permanent joie de vivre. Its distinctive boulevards, big-name cabaret theatres and celebrated coffee houses were the crossroads of social and cultural life, forming an amazing melting-pot of artistic creativity, political power and unprecedented cultural opportunities.  It was against this backdrop that Paul Dukas composedThe Sorcerer’s Apprentice, an impressionist symphonic scherzo after the ballad by Goethe, and this composition still ranks as his greatest achievement. Some 20 years earlier in Paris, Camille Saint-Saëns wrote his first cello concerto which, at the time, was considered the best work of its kind, and this jewel in the crown of the cello’s repertoire is played for us tonight by Ivan Vokáč, winner of the prestigious international cello competition in Liezen, Austria, among others. Then the inter-war musical period is represented by Bohuslav Martinů’s ballet suite Špalíček which, although written in France, draws its inspiration from Czech folk themes.
