Slavonic Rhapsodies, Op.45
Our January concert in this series celebrates Czech music and nature in all its beauty, starting with the Orchestra’s principal guest conductor Leoš Svárovský conducting the music of Vítězslav Novák, a composer for whom nature and folklore were an inexhaustible well of inspiration. Novák, a keen hiker and mountaineer, climbed countless Moravian and Slovak peaks, and it was on one of his climbs in the Tatras that he got the idea of composing the impressionistic symphonic poem In the Tatras, superbly depicting the power of the mountain landscape, its changing atmosphere and his personal experience of the journey.,
Novák's tone poem is followed by Zdeněk Křížek's Trumpet Concerto, still a somewhat neglected jewel in the trumpet repertoire. This remarkable 1957 work combines late Romantic harmonies with modern elements, at times even evoking the dramatic urgency of Shostakovich. This performance is by Stanislav Masaryk, the Czech Philharmonic's eminent first trumpeter.
Our finale is the set of three Slavonic Rhapsodies by Antonín Dvořák, brimming with idyllic pastoral atmosphere, dramatic turns and joie de vivre. During Dvořák's lifetime they were among his most frequently performed works and contributed significantly to the composer's first artistic success abroad.
