Symphony No. 98 in B flat major, Hob. I:98
This concert brings together works by three giants of Viennese Classicism – Haydn, Mozart and Beethoven – with commanding compositions that have appealed to audiences for more than 200 years. Three composers, three different fates, and yet one message in common about the beauty of music and its timelessness.
It starts with Beethoven's Leonora overture Opus 138 to his only opera, Fidelio. This overture, which is less frequently performed, gives an impressively masterful display of the atmosphere of tension and hope, foreshadowing the dramatic story of a brave woman who, in disguise, sets out to save her unjustly imprisoned husband.
This is followed by Mozart’s Piano Concerto No. 17 in G major written for his favourite pupil Barbara Ployer. This is a delightful work with a light, playful and sparkling piano role with a clear Mozartian melodic feel. One of its note sequences is said to have inspired the composer’s pet starling which liked the tune so much that it began to sing it.
The concert ends with Haydn's Symphony No. 98 in B flat major, written during the composer's stay in London. This symphony features Haydn's much-admired creative energy, thoughtful instrumentation and surprising musical gestures. The final movement contains a piano passage that is said to have been played by Haydn himself at the premiere.
Tonight’s concert is directed in its entirety by Vojtěch Spurný, who takes on the unique role of both conductor and soloist.
