It’s coming on 20 years since Karel Svoboda, one of the best-known composers in Czech film, TV, pop and musicals left us for the musical heavens.  A hitmaker of genius and the most commercially successful composer of Czech pop music in a career of almost half a century, he created countless songs which stand out for their catchy tunes and strong choruses.

Karel Svoboda's work is still an integral part of Czech music history with barely any Czech singer’s repertoire not including some of his songs. In fact virtually everyone who is anyone in Czech (and formerly Czechoslovakian) pop music has worked with him, as his songs have been sung by  Karel Gott, Helena Vondráčková, Hana Zagorová, Eva Pilarová, Waldemar Matuška, Jiří Schelinger, Michal David, Iveta Bartošová, Petra Janů, Dalibor Janda, Daniel Hůlka and many others. His work, sold in the millions of records, garnered numerous awards including platinum and diamond discs from Supraphon. 

Besides pop and musicals, Svoboda was prolific in his equally important work for film and TV and tonight’s concert, a collaborative project with the Soundtrack Poděbrady International Festival of Film Music and Multimedia, is our tribute to Svoboda’s immortal film and TV music which appeals to listeners across the generations. We’ll hear unforgettable numbers from A Night at Karlštejn, Three Wishes for Cinderella, Circus Humberto, The Visitors, Létající Čestmír and others. Tonight’s soloists are DavidDeyl and Charlotte Režná, with the Orchestraunder the baton of conductorKryštof Marek.
