Our two composers tonight have written an enormous quantity of truly unforgettable music for films and TV. Ennio Morricone has been amazingly prolific with soundtracks for more than 500 films and TV serials. Although these include only 30 westerns, it is these that are his best known numbers, and the first half of tonight's concert includes soundtracks from For a Fistful of Dollars, For a Few Dollars More, The Good, The Bad and The Ugly, Once Upon a Time in the West, Days of Heaven, Once Upon a Time in America, The Mission and many more. Luboš Fišer wrote classical music, and was also a greatly sought-after and admired composer of film music. He was appreciated by film directors for his hardworking, reliable, responsible and professional approach. His tremendous talent for music enabled him to capture in a very sensitive way the atmosphere of any film genre, and his name is on the soundtrack of Czech motion pictures such as Petrolejové lampy, Morgiana, Zlatí úhoři, Smrt krásných srnců, Lásky mezi kapkami deště, Slaměný klobouk, Adéla ještě nevečeřela, and Tajemství hradu v Karpatech. He also wrote for Czech TV films and serials, such as Chalupáři, Vlak dětství a naděje, Arabela. Our celebration tonight is two-fold: his film music, but also what would have been his 80th birthday, and this joint production with the National Film Archive and Czech Television will take place for the first time with our orchestra at the Smetana international music festival in Litomyšl in June. The idea and its theatrical presentation are by Vojtěch Stříteský, and the arranger is Mirko Krebs.
