Pines of Rome is the second part of the Italian composer Ottorino Respighi's trilogy written in 1924, a colourful and musical depiction of pine trees in different locations in Rome at different times of the day. This first work in tonight's concert is followed in exuberant fashion by the contemporary Czech composer Eduard Douša's four-movement Concerto for Four Saxophones, with its clear undertones of jazz, performed by the acclaimed Bohemia Saxophone Quartet.

Modest Petrovich Mussorgsky was an acquaintance of the artist and architect Viktor Hartmann, in memory of whom an exhibition of about 400 of his works was held. Among these were the early book illustrations, travel sketches, architectural and costume designs, and these were what inspired Mussorgsky's unusual composition Kartinky or Pictures at an Exhibition. Originally written for piano, the work was later adapted for instruments by, among others, Maurice Ravel, and is one of the most popular with audiences around the world.
