Their enjoyment of playing chamber music is what inspired three woodwind players to form the Ligneus (from the Latin "wood") Trio. That was in 2005, when the three came together for the first time as members of the Bohuslav Martinů Philharmonic Orchestra in Zlín, and they have been performing together in concerts in the Czech Republic and abroad ever since. The musicians also perform in solo roles with our orchestra and others in the Czech Republic.

Pavel Vacek, an actor with the Městské Divadlo municipal theatre in Zlín, found inspiration in Jean Giono's book which tells the story of a man who places his hope in planting trees. His decision to plant the trees, which enhance the surrounding countryside and give it fertility, also enriches his own life and that of others. The tale is complemented by expressive chamber pieces performed by the Ligneus Trio.

This evening's concert also features works by the French composers Jacques Ibert and Henri Tomasi, who were contemporaries of our own Bohuslav Martinů.
