This final Subscription Series A concert presents Ludwig van Beethoven's monumental 9th Symphony, his last. Completed in 1824 when he was already profoundly deaf, the four-movement work was ranked soon after its premiere as a jewel in the world's musical crown. The symphony boasts at least one unique feature in that its final movement includes, for the first time, a choral element - something unprecedented in the symphony genre at the time, hence the epithet 'Choral'. The work is a musical setting of the 'Ode to Joy' by the German poet, writer, playwright and personal friend of Beethoven's Friedrich Schiller. This motif, as we know, was adopted in 1985 as the anthem of the then European Community, the precursor of today's European Union.

This magnificent work is performed tonight by the Bohuslav Martinů Philharmonic and the outstanding Brno-based Czech Philharmonic Choir, which meets even the highest international standards. The solo parts are sung by the Brno Opera's Pavla Vykopalová and Jana Hrochová, by the Thalia prizewinner in 2000 Tomáš Černý, and the Moravian-Silesian National Theatre soloist Martin Gurbaľ. At the conductor's podium is Leoš Svárovský.
