The idea behind this project is to highlight the women in the Masaryk family, who did not always stay in the background but do not receive much mention by historians writing about the period of the emergence of independent Czechoslovakia. During the course of the evening we will hear readings of letters by T. G. Masaryk's wife Charlotte and also their daughter Alice from before, during, and immediately after the founding of Czechoslovakia in 1918.
This evening's musical content has also been chosen with this connection in mind, because František Škroup is the composer of the tune 'Kde domov můj'. The tune was first played in September 1834 at the Estates Theatre in Prague in Josef Kajetán Tyl's play 'Fidlovačka aneb Žádný hněv a žádná rvačka' and later became our country's national anthem. Antonín Dvořák is considered to be the first Czech composer to achieve truly international renown in the exceptional visibility he gave to his Slavic and Czech sources of inspiration. In contrast, Leoš Janáček is seen as a 20th century innovator who lived to see at first hand the country's founding and the first decade of its existence. Alice Garrigue Masaryk, the daughter of "Daddy Masaryk", was active in the public domain and was the founder and first head of the Czechoslovak Red Cross, which worked intensively to improve social conditions and the education of women.
Taking part in this production is the Doležal Quartet, a leading Czech chamber music group established in 1972. The spoken content is presented by Valérie Zawadská, the Czech actress who hails from Šternberk and is one of the country's most highly-regarded voice-over artists.
