Our second Subscription Series A concert features an all-Russian programme, beginning with Alexander Glazunov's Oriental Rhapsody which the composer dedicated on its completion to the illustrious Russian painter Ilya Repin. The work, made up of five pictures, is a brilliant example of Glazunov's fascination for the exotic and of his exceptional skill in using distinctive and colourful instrumentation.

Sergey Prokofiev composed his second violin concerto shortly after his return home to the Soviet Union from Paris. It was written for the French violinist Robert Soëtens, who premiered it in December 1935. Thanks primarily to its captivating melodies the concerto very soon became one of the most popular and most frequently performed works of its kind on the world stage. Our soloist tonight is the highly respected Polish violinist Jarosław Nadrzycki, the winner of many prestigious European competitions for performing artists.

The second half of the concert is taken up by Alexander Borodin's Symphony no. 2. Considered by many as one of the founders of the Russian symphonic genre, Borodin wrote the work between 1869 and 1876, and it was subsequently dubbed the "Heroic" by Vladimir Stasov, the influential Russian art critic and friend of the composer for many years.

The Zlín Philharmonic Orchestra is conducted by the Ukrainian conductor Yuriy Yanko, who has been working with a whole range of prominent European symphony orchestras for some considerable time.
