Fiery Classics is a unique concept in which the remarkable Slovak group Cigánski Diabli come together on the same stage with the Bohuslav Martinů Philharmonic Orchestra.

The programme opens with some of the best tunes from the opera Carmen in an arrangement by the Cigánski Diabli and embellished with their own variations in a non-traditional and fascinating fusion of Bizet's original music and other musical styles. This musical duel makes up the first half of the concert, with the orchestra doing its own thing on the same footing as the Slovak musicians, and not just in an accompanying role. It is this notion of a "musical duel" between the two sets of performers that makes for such an incredibly energetic and highly charged experience, together with the buzz of rare artistic virtuosity from the Cigánski Diabli.

The timeless narrative of ill-fated love and Bizet's composing skills came together in the wonderful opera Carmen, and tonight the opera's characteristic elements of Spanish and gypsy spirit come alive again as the composer's passionate melodies are masterfully synthesised with elements of jazz, flamenco, ethno, gypsy music and more, topped off with vocals that really bring alive the gentle yet passionate and headstrong character that is Carmen.

The second half of the performance features pop, classical, film, folk and world-ethno music which will include the melancholic Slovak folk song Páslo dievča pávy, Monti's popular csardas, and Oscar-winning pieces from the film Schindler's List. Mention should also be made of the ballad called Tribute to the Victims of the Holocaust, in which the vocals and the music very sensitively express the whole range of emotions around the tragedy that was the Shoah.
The Fiery Classics programme is performed by the Cigánski Diabli and the Bohuslav Martinů Philharmonic Orchestra under the baton of the acclaimed Slovak conductor Adrián Kokoš, whose professional activities include working with the Slovak Radio Symphony Orchestra.
