D2 THE CONDUCTOR - A STRANGE CREATURE

Venue: Zlín Congress Centre  |  Organizer: Filharmonie Bohuslava Martinů, o.p.s.  |

MARTIN PÁŠMA, script
TOMÁŠ ILLE, music

BOHUSLAV MARTINŮ PHILHARMONIC ORCHESTRA
TOMÁŠ BRAUNER, conductor

Who on earth is this strange figure? He's the last to come on stage, he keeps everyone waiting, the musicians stand up to greet him, the audience clap him, then he gets up on this box thing, turns his back on the people who were so keen to see him, jerks his body around weirdly is if he's having a work-out or trying to dance. And look - he's got a stick in his hand! What's that for anyway? If he's not doing a work-out or having a dance, perhaps he's a magician? The orchestra keep looking at this strange figure and they can see he's not playing anything, but he seems to be at the centre of the attention like some kind of VIP. Then the orchestra comes to the end of the piece and all of a sudden Mr Bigwig in front of them stops jumping about. The audience starts clapping and then he turns round to them and takes a bow, as if it was him that played the music! Then he gets the musicians to stand up and they thank each other. Finally he gets a bunch of flowers, and the orchestra has to wait on stage while he goes off. But the people haven't stopped clapping, so on he comes again, takes some more bows, then he goes off again and so do the musicians. The whole thing is remarkable, but what does it all mean? You can't help wondering if that strange person with the stick isn't somehow controlling the musicians. That would be really astonishing! And what is it they call him? The conductor! We definitely need to find out more about this creature.

Well this new presentation by the Bohuslav Martinů Philharmonic Orchestra will tell us everything there is to know about conductors. And you can be sure there'll be lots of laughs!
