In times past the purpose of music in the cinema was mainly to illustrate or complement the action on the big screen. These days however, things are completely different, and film music has all but reinvented itself as a huge phenomenon such that it is difficult to imagine any film today in which music or sound has no part to play. The music of the silver screen often has a special indescribable magic of its own and a definite knack of gently imprinting itself in the mind of the spectator. Indeed its forcefulness sometimes even manages to eclipse the plot line, and many is the time that a film soundtrack has become so popular and instantly recognisable that it has then been issued on music media platforms in its own right.

Our Movie Night line-up tonight features superb arrangements of some of the best-known film soundtracks in an appealing live setting performed by a large symphony orchestra, with Chief Conductor Tomáš Brauner directing the Bohuslav Martinů Philharmonic in an attractive programme of selected soundtracks from the world's best movie music composers such as John Williams, Hans Zimmer, Ennio Morricone, Howard Shore and Elmer Bernstein. Among the popular hits will be pieces from the Star Wars and Harry Potter series, the Westerns Once Upon a Time in the West and The Magnificent Seven, the Lord of the Rings trilogy and films such as Indiana Jones, Pirates of the Caribbean and Gladiator.
