Igor Stravinsky: Elegy for solo viola

Pavel Březík, viola
Martina Mergentalová, piano

Our second Subscription Series F concert showcases Russian music, consisting entirely of works by Prokofiev, Khachaturyan, Stravinsky and Shostakovich - Russian composers of world renown. The programme is performed by the Bohuslav Martinů Philharmonic's viola soloist Pavel Březík and the pianist Martina Mergentalová.

Pavel Březík, who comes from Zlín, began by playing the violin but switched five years later to the viola, in which he graduated from the P. J. Vejvanovský Conservatory in Kroměříž and subsequently from the Academy of Performing Arts in Prague. He is a laureate of the Beethoven Hradec Prize international viola competition and finalist at the Brahms international viola competition in Austria. In addition to solo and orchestral performance he teaches at the Conservatory in Kroměříž.

The pianist Martina Mergentalová graduated from the P. J. Vejvanovský Conservatory in Kroměříž and from the Janáček Academy of the Performing Arts in Brno. A regular performer at solo and chamber recitals, she has taken a keen interest for more than 20 years in the practical elements of playing chamber music, and also in the theoretical aspects of that process and of piano accompaniment. Her work in these fields is documented in her as yet unpublished study "Distinctive Features of the Piano Accompanist's Role" and her textbook "The History and Literature of the Piano". She currently teaches the piano, piano history and literature, and core piano syllabus at the Kroměříž conservatory, and is a rehearsal accompanist for the students. She performs with Zlín's Bohuslav Martinů Philharmonic Orchestra and is a rehearsal accompanist on international violin courses.
